The Noise & the Static

On a Friday or Saturday whatta we got
Take an inventory see it’s not a whole lot
Sunday starts off the weekly dread
I can see it in your face that it not in my head
And the weeks flash by in the blink of an eye, but
every hour takes three
and you can count on one hand what’s keepin you sane
relatively
What you got, you know
What you don’t, you feel
What you got, you know
What you need is real
and all the noise and the static keeps your dreams in the attic
In a box with your old trophies
and all the stories you’ve told in the box growing old
are told now almost desperately
because the box is half full there’s room for so much more
but now they come few and far between
and when there’s nothin to write the paper burns on sight
and the smoke hits you right in the eyes
What you got, you know…
Steam hits the mirror but you see a bit clearer
‘cause you’re lookin at what’s inside
That old flag is still planted but the pole’s a bit slanted
‘cause it’s been on a hell of a ride
It’s tattered and torn and a little forlorn
because it’s years since you gave it respect
but that flag still flies ‘cause you’re still alive
as your eyes now so plainly see
What you got, you know...

Don’t stop, never look back
Every day you’re here could be your last
Don’t break, don’t shatter like glass
You’re only as brittle as the mask in which you are cast
Don’t quit, not one little bit
When you’re called into action, there’s no room to sit
Better to be yourself
Ain’t no sense in livin’ for nobody else
Better to be yourself, now what you gonna do?
Don’t stop, never look back
Every day you’re here could be your last
Don’t break, it’s a mistake
They got so much to give but was it ever theirs to take
Don’t lie, don’t try to deny
That on this path you’ve been walkin you’ll cry you’ll sigh
but you’ll fly
Better to be yourself
Ain’t no sense in livin’ for nobody else
Better to be yourself, now what you gonna do?
Don’t you know you can never look back
Better to be yourself...

You didn’t say what you know
but quick to say what I feel
I had to walk away
I could not face today
as just a part of the show
I had to walk away I couldn’t slip right past you
We were so intertwined except where we just had to
I had to walk away when it stopped being true
Painful days ‘cause I knew
the time was short with you
I had to break the band
so you could safely land
That cold was never my home
I had to walk away I couldn’t slip right past you
We were so intertwined except where we just had to
I had to walk away when it stopped being true
It’s gonna all work out...
The light shines through the cracks

American Shooter

There’s more to him than a laughingstock
He tried to tell me but he only got mocked
An ear listened in the digital wasteland
Told him how to grow to be a take charge man
He was the first home for dinner and the last one picked
the last with a girl you know he felt he’d been tricked
Now he’s alone in a field with a ball in his hands
King for a moment when his tear hits the land
Gonna be an American Shooter
out of the ashes of that beaten loser
Give him a gun and we’ll see who’s been neutered
You’re gonna listen when he rains down hell
With prank after prank his esteem’s in the tank
He went blank and sank and stepped out on the plank
With every one of our jabs he fell further down
To the hell within which that king was crowned
Will today be the day he reveals our work
Finally perfected and prepared to be birthed
Will today be the day a king will arrive
Will today be a day that we all survive
Gonna be an American Shooter...
run. fight.
Rich poor black white doesn’t matter when you’re in his sights
ugh. I’m down.
Now I can’t take back my words and he can’t take back those rounds
Not like we woulda though
although we shoulda known
we’d end up headline news
